Parents

You want to help your child when it comes to going forward with a career and with college. Here are some tips:

Help your student choose a college. Discuss the importance of:

  • Small class sizes
  • Professional instructors with real-world experience
  • Flexible scheduling with day, evening and online options
  • Career placement assistance for all graduates
  • Degree choices
  • Multiple locations
  • Long history
  • Continuously updated programs

Help your child choose a major. Encourage a student to:

  • Look at the long term job market
  • Be flexible and adaptable
  • Study hard
  • Consider internships or volunteer experiences
  • Surf the web to learn about different fields and find career advice sites
  • Think about favorite subjects
  • Remember that education is the door to lifelong learning that pays off

Help your kid get financial aid. Give your student gentle reminders to:

  • Start soon
  • Meet with college financial aid representatives
  • Apply for scholarships
  • Work with you to complete the FAFSA
  • Check e-mail and snail mail regularly
  • Ask for help
